I’ve been in reflection a bit lately about the things that have transpired in my life to have brought me to where I am now. I have been in a place of gratitude and amazement at all of the “trials” that were working together for my good and felt inspired to share this post that I wrote last year when I was going through cancer. It is probably one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever written. I hope you enjoy. 💛💛💛💛
From a post written March 2017…
…Today I'm getting real. This space is meant to be a place to find authenticity, beauty, inspiration, and hope and I believe that there is nothing more beautiful than a human being real about the ups AND downs of this life. Without going into detail, I am currently dealing with some medical hardships that are a new experience for me and something that I didn't plan on dealing with this year or ever for that matter.
I am grateful for the experience of growth that I am getting to have. I am grateful that I can add this to my list of life experiences that are adding to my reservoir of faith, empathy, compassion, and love for others and the life I have been given. I am also excited about the constant obstacles of fear I am having to bust through because honestly one of my greatest aspirations is to become FEARLESS and what better way to do that than to experience really hard things? Do we ever plan on having trials? Do we ever wish heartache and pain to befall us or others around us? The thing is... these things come, they come for a reason, and they are usually out of our control.
Today I want to write about the path I'm on, the beauty of surrendering to what is, and being human to the fullest.
When you are going through something hard, something out of your control, something that just plain sucks you are given the opportunity to learn. Life becomes a classroom for learning how to let go of expectations, of past wounds, of control. You are welcomed into the realm of taking life a day at a time, being grateful for whatever you can find good about the situation, and seeing the love that is ALL AROUND YOU. You get the opportunity to exercise FAITH and learn to trust God and the higher powers that are to know that everything is happening for your good. You also get to practice becoming a badass. In one of my all-time favorite books, "You are a Badass" by Jen Sincero, she says,
"DOUBT is resistance, FAITH is surrender. WORRY is resistance, JOY is surrender. CONTROL is resistance, ALLOWING is surrender. RIDICULE is resistance, BELIEVING is surrender."
She goes on to say, "Your faith in the universe must be stronger than your fear of not getting what you want." Throughout this journey, I have been constantly asking myself, "Do I trust God enough to take care of this?" "Do I trust myself and others who I am in their care to do their best, make the right decisions, and take care of me?" "Do I believe in the love and faith of the people in my life to help carry me through this?" "Can I let go of my need to be in control of everything and take care of myself to allow others to be there and support me?" These are just some of the questions that have come up for me and I am learning huge lessons through all of it. The greatest lesson is the peace and joy that comes from letting go of control and learning to have faith and trust. In the book "Getting Real" by Susan Campbell you will find one of my favorite quotes of all time.
"By letting go of the need to be right, safe, and certain in favor of being real, unique, and open to surprise, you affirm yourself as a living, ever-changing presence -- participating in life's changes instead of trying to control them... You are energetically alive. People can feel you when you come into a room. When you look at them, they feel seen. When you listen, they feel heard. When you speak, they listen."
You see, the blessings that come through surrendering to the heartache, challenges, and trials of life, are hundred fold. You get to feel the love of others and become someone who is more capable of GIVING love. You actually become more alive as you are taken down to the bottom and then experience the JOY of rising up and the GRATITUDE for life that becomes yours to KNOW. You come closer to GOD and have a greater amount of FAITH that he is working everything together for your good. You get to slow down and appreciate the really important things in life because those start to seem like the only things that matter.
And you get to experience the beauty of truly living, from the bottom up.
Trials, heartache, and just plain crummy experiences, while always painful in the moment bring us through a tunnel into a light unimaginable. Louise Hayes says in her book "You Can Heal Your Life, "
"Be glad to be alive, to be healthy, to have friends, to be creative, to be a living example of the joy of living life to your highest awareness."
Enjoy The Transformational Process
Trials are the outside of a cocoon transforming a worm into a butterfly. Sometimes when we're in the middle of them it is hard to see how beautiful the outcome will truly be, but for any out there who may be, or have gone, or will go through (which in case you were wondering, includes YOU :)) heartache, pain, or trial, I hope this message is one of hope, faith, and joy. Because as Louise Haye goes on to say in her book:
"Sometimes what seems to be a big tragedy turns out to become the greatest good in our lives. I learned so much from that experience and I came to value life in a new way. I began to look at what was really important to me."
I am still in the cocoon and I invite you along on the journey to the end. I don't know all that this process will still entail but I am surrendering to the will of the universe and I am choosing to have faith that everything is coming together for my good and that one day I will be able to look back and also say that this experience turned out to be one of the greatest goods because if there is anything I have learned in this life it's that hard things always do. I do know that I am already starting to see life in a new way and valuing the gift that is life 100 percent more. God is good, he truly is. Have faith and trust him, look up, surrender to what is, and take part in the journey of becoming human to the fullest….
