Okay people, it's the second week of March, we are literally almost 1/4 of the way done with 2018. CRAZY!! I know. Time is flying so fast I don't even know what to do about it. So... in light of that fact, today, we're talking GOALS!
I bet you all made some New Year's resolutions, how are those going for you?
Yeah, I'm not interested in the type of New Years resolution goals we all set and then forget about them, can you even remember what your new years goals were at this point? Raise your hand if you can't. I'm also not interested in the kind of goals where you think about something you'd like to do, say to yourself, "well, that'd be nice," and then brush it off because it actually isn't that important to you.
The kind of goals I want to talk about are the ones that light your soul on fire, the DREAMS that live in you that have this constant little voice and are screaming louder and louder to get out.
"Those who accomplish the most in life are those with a vision."
The thing about dreams is that they CAN and WILL come true if you MAKE them happen. And the path to the fruition of a dream is setting a goal. Goal setting is beginning with the end in mind. It is creating a vision of the thing/life/relationship/career you want to have and then working backward to make a plan of how to get there.
DREAM = the vision
GOAL = the destination
PLAN = the route for which you get there
One reason this is on my mind is because I launched my dream one year ago today. It popped up on my facebook feed and reminded me (don't you just love those). One year ago today I launched my business. This was a HUGE dream and I want to share with you the journey of how I got there.
I've shared this story many times, but here's a few more details. 3 years ago I had NO idea what I was doing with my life. Literally. I was 26 years old, teaching school because that's the job that had been handed to me, and feeling more and more overwhelmed and frustrated every day that I wasn't doing anything that I actually wanted to do, that I didn't even know what I wanted to do and therefore, had no vision to act on.
I had some little ideas in my head, I had a couple of passions and skills and interests. I had thought about how I could put them together, but hadn't told ANYONE. I was slightly terrified of these ideas because they were different, they were not anything anyone else had done (at least that I knew of), and frankly they were something I had never heard of before.
Then I made a courageous move. I quit that good job to go and find something greater. I moved to San Francisco and started EXPLORING MYSELF. I explored the city and different jobs, I carried around 15 pound flower arrangements delivering them by foot, I worked in an architecture office, I interviewed at a bank, I worked at a bakery for 3 days, Anthropologie for a couple months (no it's not all it's cracked up to be, although I LOVE that store), and tried a slew of other things. I just knew that the idea in my head was what I was supposed to do.
One day I dragged one of my roommates downstairs, closed the door, and made her swear to not tell anyone what I was about to tell her. And that is when I voiced my dream. She was the first person to hear about it and I was scared to death to tell someone. And guess what...
She loved it. She absolutely loved it and said, "Clarissa, you HAVE to do this."
There it was. And that began the journey of the next 18 months until I finally launched my dream out into the world and here a year later I can tell you that there have been SO MANY challenges, growth experiences, opportunities, and failures and guess what? Regardless, it all keeps getting better.
Because I have an inner purpose, it seriously doesn't matter if everything else in life seems to be falling apart, because I know what I am meant to do in this world and I have goals and plans set in place to accomplish them.
So... what is your dream? What can you start doing today to start working on that dream? Even if it's just a little thing, let's create a goal together today to get you started! Because you have to start somewhere, why not now?
Steps to turn Dreams/Goals into REALITY....
Get really clear on what it is that you want.
Reduce the goal to ONE CLEAR IMAGE.
Write out WHY you want this. What will it bring to you, how will it change your life? Your why is your DRIVING force. It is the engine in the car. Without it, you will not go anywhere.
Create a PLAN, roadmap, of how you will get there.
This Plan needs to involve a few things in order for you to be successful.
Specific. The plan must be specific; when you will accomplish it by and exactly how. Be precise.
Measurable. How will you know you have reached your goal. How will things in your life have changed?
Attainable. Is this something you can actually accomplish? Nothing is impossible, so with this I mean: Are you giving yourself enough time? Do you have the tools you need to be successful? If not, what do you need?
State each goal and part of the plan as a positive statement.
WRITE them down.
Display them in a spot you will see them every day.
Say the positive statements every day out loud.
Discipline yourself to accomplish each step of the plan in the time frame you set.
If you don't quite make it, stand up, brush yourself off, and try again.
"Happiness is the understanding that goals actually matter and then putting forth a plan to get there."
Anything is possible if you set your mind to it and actually believe. (And guess what? A trick I use is to go somewhere completely alone, say in the mountains in my car with my windows all rolled up, (or anywhere you can be comfortable and not disturb other people) and SCREAM these affirmations at the top of your lungs until it feels so real and so a part of you that there is no question in your mind that you will accomplish this goal and make this dream come true. AND it feels amazing. You feel completely alive inside.
You have to believe it. Really believe it.
Believe in yourself.
The dreams will come.
But they start with a vision, and a goal and a plan.
Comment below your dream. And if it's something that you just don't dare put out into the world quite yet email me at firstname.lastname@example.org I would be so honored to be the person you confide in.
It's all coming for you. Just start.
